UPDATE: Scratch the conclusion above. Turned out that I had a maven dependency on persistence-api-1.0.jar after all. I still don't understand why it didn't show up on eclipse or mvn dependency:tree. Perhaps it was because the sub-component dependency specified <provided>true</provided>. Further info here.
